Q&A With Lüc Carl, Author of The Drunk Diet
Since the WriteByNight Book Club usually divides a book into three parts, but Lüc’s book was already divided up into parts one and two, we’re doing something a little different this week. I asked Lüc a few questions about life, the universe and everything, and he shot back a few answers. Here’s a little Q&A with the author of The Drunk Diet himself, Lüc Carl.
Q: Have you always had the umlaut in your name? Or is this your pen name, signifying true metal devotion?
A: I stole it from ZZ Top’s sixth record, Degüello, which is the first rock ‘n’ roll record I ever discovered. The story is in the book. (pg. 18-20)
Q: I love that you say that rock ‘n’ roll is dead on your blog, and keep dropping old-school rock bands and the playlist for running in your book. I’ve asked bar bands to “play something that rocks!” and they’ve busted out U2, so I feel your pain, man. So, I must ask: What is the absolute number one BEST rock song ever written?
A: Extremely difficult question. I’d have to go with “Rock ‘n’ Roll All Night and Party Every Day”! (U2 is a joke.)
Q: Along similar lines, do you like any female rockers? And if so, which ones?
A: Lita Ford and Joan Jett, of course!!!! Also: Joan Baez and Stevie Nicks.
Q: I really liked that your book kicked the so-called “experts” to the curb and called them on their flip-flopping bullshit. My question is, why should you take the advice of people whose bodies you like instead of the advice of fitness experts?
A: It’s a delicate balance. You can learn from the experts but don’t take them too seriously. My main thing is to enjoy life. Losing weight should make you happy. There’s no reason not to enjoy the process.
Q: Are you still a bartender? I saw on your blog that you’re part of a radio show now, so I’m wondering if this is a new career, or if you consider yourself a full-time writer now?
A: My day (night) job is DJ’ing on SiriusXM. I’m on 7 nights per week. I’m actually writing you from the studio right now! I don’t bartend anymore (thank god), but I still throw parties at the bar I used to manage!
Q: Are you planning to write another book? And if so, what will it be about?
A: I’d like to write many more books! The next one will hopefully be The Drunk Diet Cookbook with my good friend Chris Santos from the Food Network. And the next will be another memoir/non-fiction story about raising hell. I can’t give any more away, but it will be spectacular!
Thanks, Lüc, and keep on rockin’ the free world!

I’d love to see what the drunk diet cookbook consists of, though I suspect I’ve partaken in a few of those meals by now.
There are a few recipes in the back of The Drunk Diet, most of which are pretty basic, no-nonsense types of things to eat that have a lot of protein and not a lot of carbs. I liked the “Lüc Foo Young” recipe, but haven’t tried it out yet. I do eat a lot of eggs, though.
