As many of you faithful readers know, I recently became the fiction editor (or Fiction Editor–I never know whether or not to capitalize that) at the Texas Observer, a print magazine based here in Austin.

We’re not open to regular submissions at present, but we are holding our first annual short story contest, aptly named the Texas Observer Short Story Prize. Our guest judge is the legendary Larry McMurtry, author of such classics as Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, and Terms of Endearment.

The winner gets $1,000, publication in our Summer Books issue, and a free subscription, not to mention much acclaim and the potential for a great deal of inner pride.

The contest is open to Texans and non-Texans alike. There are no theme or genre restrictions, and by no means does your story have to be set in Texas. See the complete guidelines or submit your story here. The deadline is May 1, but don’t wait until the last minute.

Or wait until the last minute, as long as you send in the story.

The Fringe 2011 theme issue, MAPS, has just gone live, starting with some original nonfiction and artwork.

We’re also creating an interactive map comprised of input from our wonderful readers, which we’re calling “Places that Verb Your World” (a take-off of Fringe’s tagline, “The Noun that Verbs Your World”). If you’d like to get involved, all you need to do is send Fringe a little prose/poetry/picture about a geographically meaningful place. You can post your entry to our Facebook page, or send it via email to FringeTheMagazine@gmail.com.

    1) As always, we at WriteByNight would love the opportunity to showcase your writing on this very blog. Our submission calls will change now and again, but they’ll always be available on this post. Any questions, fire away.

    2) And finally, we are now looking for photographs of you writing/reading in “your space” for possible use on our (not-yet-live) fancy new website. As Justine says, “Creativity is highly encouraged, as are attitude and attention to detail. Plan your photo carefully: if you wear glasses when you write, wear ‘em. If you use a lucky pen, make sure it’s prominent. If your desk is usually a disaster area, don’t tidy on our account. We want to see you, WriteByNighters, in your natural habitat.”

So get writing, start snapping those photos, and send it all our way. And pass this along to all of your writing friends.

To stay even more up-to-date on what we’re up to, follow WBN on Facebook and Twitter.
