Local Writers Read at ‘An Evening With WriteByNight’
Last Thursday, local creative writing workshop program WriteByNight hosted an evening of literary readings, live music and fun at WineStyles in Palm City. The event celebrated the culmination of WriteByNight’s 8-week fall workshop session. The Creative Writing Workshop’s 9 dedicated members read from original works—genres ranged from fiction to non-fiction to poetry to memoir—addressing an audience of 50-plus. Guests sipped wine and munched hors d’oeuvres, spellbound by the writers’ talents and seasoned performances.
Other highlights of the evening included musical performances by local songwriter Luke Mazzina, and a high-yield raffle with prizes generously donated by local businesses such as Edible Spirits, Apree Salon, WineStyles and, of course, WriteByNight. Lucky winners took home holiday cakes, salon services, wine tastings, writing consultations and workshop discounts, values ranging $50 – $100. Food for the event was provided by the Tabuleh Cafe at Planet Ozone.
If you missed An Evening With WriteByNight, don’t fret! The conclusion of WriteByNight’s winter workshop session in March will bring another fabulous event with all new readings and fresh fun for all.

WriteByNight: Turning Dreams Into Reality
“I’m a barber/lawyer/florist/realtor, but what I really want to do is write.”
Sound familiar?
WriteByNight is making it happen, one Tuesday evening at a time.
WriteByNight Creative Writing Workshops burst onto Martin County’s literary scene in October with the successful launch of its fall workshop series. This eight-week program, sponsored by The Arts Council Inc. in Stuart, provides its members a creative outlet in which to present their work to a group of peers. The workshop is modeled after the top master’s programs, but is open to novices and published authors alike.
“Anyone can write,” WriteByNight Co-founder and Instructor, Justine Tal Goldberg, says. “It’s just a matter of acquiring the tools to do it successfully.”
“A workshop is invaluable for that,” her partner, David Duhr, adds. “Sharing your work is crucial.”
WriteByNight’s fall session is going strong. The workshop’s 10 members benefit from weekly discussions of contemporary literature, tips on how to see their work published and, of course, plenty of good old-fashioned workshopping. Members receive extensive written and verbal feedback on their creative work from professional writers Goldberg and Duhr and from each member of the group.
“I found my workshop extremely useful,” says current member and short fiction writer, Joanna Smith. “I value anything I can learn from Justine and David.”
“What an experience!” says Marcia Davis of a particularly challenging exercise. “I had no idea I would be so moved.” Marcia is hard at work on a memoir that she’s sure to see published.
Thanks to a warm reception from the community and the high demand for its unique services, WriteByNight is expanding. In addition to the regular creative writing workshop, the winter session lineup will include specialized workshops for screenwriting, songwriting and children’s literature.
Only two months ago, there was no such program in sight. It just goes to show: a little creative thinking can go a long way.
Dream literary, dream big, and let WriteByNight turn your writerly dreams into reality.

WriteByNight program serves authors
Oct. 27 marked a great day for the word lovers of Martin County.
WriteByNight, The Arts Council’s new creative writing workshop program, launched its fall session, solidifying its presence in the local literary scene.
That evening, WriteByNight gathered 10 writers in the council’s Ayres Gallery and passed an evening discussing each other’s work, the merits of contemporary literature, and how to overcome the challenges of publishing.
That’s what we’ll do every Tuesday evening for the next eight weeks. Then in January, we’ll commence with our winter workshop session and do it again.
WriteByNight is proud to offer a service never before seen in the area: a creative writing workshop modeled after the top master’s programs, but open to novices and professional authors alike. The response from the outset was overwhelming. Our informational events attracted crowds. We had generous offers from well-known authors to visit as guest lecturers. Our fall workshop session was full in advance of our first meeting.
We’re off to a strong start and we’re not stopping there. WriteByNight is expanding, thanks to the support of the community and the high demand for our creative services. We’re adding a Wednesday night meeting to our winter session lineup and specialized workshops for songwriting, screenwriting, and children’s literature.
Want to learn more about the program? Attend one of two informational events on Jan. 5 at 6 and 7 p.m. at The Arts Council in Stuart.
Registration for WriteByNight’s winter session is open. Visit www.writebynight.net, email info@writebynight.net or call (914) 420-0821.

WriteByNight
Writers of all genres and skill levels are invited to join WriteByNight, Martin County’s newest creative writing workshop. This structured, course-style program will be unlike any other in the area. Founded by Palm City residents Justine Tal Goldberg and David Duhr, and sponsored by the Stuart Arts Council, WriteByNight will provide writers the opportunity to receive in-depth feedback on their work and publishing advice from expert instructors.
Set to launch in late October, WriteByNight will meet once a week for two months in a gallery at The Arts Council, an intimate, artistic setting designed to foster creativity and community. The workshop’s ultimate goal is to improve all aspects of your work and make you the best writer you can be. Your writing will be WriteByNight’s No.1 priority.
Workshop sessions will begin with an exploration of contemporary published work, followed by a thorough analysis of new writing submitted by workshop participants. Each piece will receive detailed written and oral critique from the instructors and fellow members. Discussions will dig below the surface to examine root issues such as character, setting, and technique. Sessions will end with a conversation about the publishing industry, including tips on how to get your work read by the right people. Participants will be encouraged to post comments, questions and even their own work on WriteByNight’s blog, and the instructors will be available for one-on-one consultation outside of the workshop.
WriteByNight’s instructors have a wealth of writing experience and a thorough knowledge of the publishing industry. Justine Tal Goldberg is an award-winning fiction writer and freelancer. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Creative Writing and has provided writing instruction at Vassar College and Emerson College. David Duhr is a fiction editor at Fringe Magazine and a freelance reviewer of books and literary journals. He has led discussions in dozens of workshops, and his writing has received accolades from several prominent literary outlets.
The workshop will begin October 27th. The cost is $240 for the full eight-week session, with the option to purchase the first two workshops for $50 with no further obligation. Goldberg and Duhr will hold four free information seminars at The Arts Council, October 20th at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. and October 26th at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Visit www.writebynight.net or email info@writebynight.net for details and updates.
